Woodcut

The design is cut into a woodblock. It is difficult to have fine lines as cutting the wood too thin runs the risk of splitting.

Engraving

The design is cut into a metal plate with a burin. The lines are sharper, clearer, and finer than woodblock.

Etching

Using wax to cover the design, the design dissolves in an acid bath onto a metal plate. The lines made are looser and freer than engraving.

Lithography

The design is drawn with a special crayon onto a polished stone; the ink sticks to the crayon, and the design is produced. This allows printmaker to work freely, producing a work similar to drawings.
